there's this lovely Welsh song, Yma o hyd, which translates to, very simply, 'we're still here.' It's a banger, it's made for big social singing, it's a true Eisteddfod song. Had a hankering to listen to it, and I popped it open on youtube to enjoy. And in the comments I saw a repeating trend of ... I guess I'd say 'English nationalists' arguing that Wales isn't oppressed, because real oppression only looks like 'North Korea or China.'
And it's exhausting because like so many parts of that sentence suck but also, the implicit ridiculousness that North Korea and China? Very similar countries, with very similar levels of social control.
Bleaugh.
