there were a bunch of wallabies just hanging out in the grass with basically nothing separating them from people. i imagine this is what living in australia is like

it was extremely funny to go from "WELCOME to AFRICA" with a lot of elaborate closed-off environments to "WELCOME to AUSTRALIA" and it's basically a park with big weird rabbits just chilling everywhere
The fact that they were just sitting there while so many kids were petting them and giving them skritches was especially amazing to me.
yeah, chill beyond belief. maybe they have no natural predators? maybe in the wild they all hang out with one kangaroo who can beat up predators? i don't know
They outsize predation nowadays. The main wild animal that harms these critters are one another or feral invasive species like pigs and dogs.
Also, when they want to go they can go, and when they want to hurt you they can.
Wallabies are pretty good. They also have a weird kind of OCD/pattern seeking, and a model of the mind of non-wallabies.
Kangaroos tend to be a bit more standoffish, but wallabies are great. It was always my favourite part of visiting the native animal sanctuary back home. The only animal I can think of that was more chill around people was the bin chicken.
The full Australian experience would also have some blue-ringed octopi in a rock pool to cuddle. But yes pretty much.
The zoo here in Kansas City has a separate section for "Australia"... That just has a herd of Kangaroos wandering around. Often lazing about in the middle of a clearing.
