returning to this it seems the use case this person desired was one where if they make a post, they get to see everyone following up on it, including people creating hostile or negative material, but also people riffing on it. Because if people riff on it, then other people riff on that riff, the original author doesn't get to see it, so this discourages interacting with them.

which means they don't see the idea of a comment section as meaningful engagement, which I guess makes sense because it means instead of talking to people you're putting your conversation on a stage for an audience.
