this whole linux malware is really showing a gap in communication bw computer ppl who use linux and everyone else they keep telling to use linux

BIG FLASHING 'IF YOU USE LINUX READ THIS POST' WARNING which links to a bunch of extremely technical explanations i layperson wouldn't understand. vs the ppl who are like 'if you're using x version or y version you need to pay attention. everyone else pay attention but its not as urgent'

hmm i think the issue im speaking to is that im not really seeing a lot of lay communication that goes past 'you should be afraid of this', especially initially.

i think a particular part of it is that 'linux' is broad enough in its applications to be roughly equivalent to saying 'if you have a computer'? in the sense of, you're talking to both server admins AND ppl who basically use linux as if it were windows with less bullshit and have no technical knowledge beyond that

(that's also why i referenced the xkcd comic; i suspect a lot of ppl raising an alert about this just didnt realize that the stuff they were linking to was still pretty obscure to the average person, unlike words like 'malware' and 'backdoor' which are pretty mainstream at this point)

I completely scrolled past all the posts about it because it all looked way too in depth. a simple 'if you use x/y/z, do 1/2/3' at the top and THEN a link to the original and a breakdown of it would be very helpful for people who aren't going to/don't know how to/don't have time to rtfm for something like this.

yea i use linux daily and the gulf between whats being talked about in those posts and my actual understanding might as well be infinite. so im just hoping its not my problem!
