Specifically integrating "assistants" into Microsoft for the purpose of scraping guide sites and cannibalizing their traffic seems like it's the primary strategy here and like, the degree to which this is adversarial with what little remains of game sites at this point is.. Well....

bruno
@bruno

microsoft seems adamant on shoving this into every game on their platforms so game devs also get to look forward to players sending confused bug reports (or refunding games, posting negative reviews, etc) because the LLM told them to do something that doesn't work in the game

we will look back on this time and wonder what happened to microsoft before their big market share decline

that their foray into the gaming market truly does spell the end.

in reply to @MOOMANiBE's post:

This is a whole new level of cryptogameology. Instead of hearing about things from someone's uncle who works at Nintendo, kids are swearing up and down that the Minecraft AI told them you could find Pokemon under a truck you can only get to from a special portal.

this doesn't make any sense

  • minecraft is like 20 years old and wildly popular. it is the most popular thing ever. so there is a metric fuckton of text written about it. how is this supposed to work for a game you haven't released yet

  • a big thing with minecraft is that you don't know the set of objects you can craft, so "how do i craft a sword" is useful approximately once. also it has a recipe book so that's really useful approximately zero times

  • and i guess more generally, something that rattles around in my head every so often: if LLMs take off and it becomes clear that anything you write online is just fodder for them, why would people keep writing about stuff at all

in reply to @bruno's post:

this was immediately what i thought of. however it's presented or intended, it's basically an end run around / competitor to whatever authored teaching that a game does within itself, and it directly undermines the work designers do to present the concepts in a game. and of course we know it's going to do a shitass job, it'll get things completely wrong and even when it doesn't, it'll explain things in that Statistically Average Language that completely clashes with the actual writing in the game, whatever tone and creative context the game is trying to build with the player, etc.

yet another thing in the world that will be made unequivocally worse if this shit doesn't die soon.

It doesn't even make sense to add this to Minecraft - the example they give is helping players figure out what they need to craft something, but the game already has an initial tutorial and crafting recipes. If they want more than that... Why aren't they just fleshing out the tutorial? It's cheaper and less resource intensive, and it will actually give the same, accurate information each time, rather than inconsistent, bullshit LLM output.
