I talk a lot of shit about how fucking awful AI is, but this right here? This is what AI is supposed to be for.
This kind of shit is INSANELY powerful. Running handwriting processing to do live equation processing? That's next level. That's wizardry. That's pure fucking insanity.
This is the kind of shit we should be using AI models on. Fuck that generative nonsense - take human processing to the next level instead.
part of the issues i have is, a decade ago, this stuff felt like the natural progression of say, lasso tool or content aware scaling.
wasn’t magic, just clever application of programming. which is all “ artificial intelligence “ (a marketing term made up by a guy who was mad someone he didn’t like coined cybernetics so he could get dod contracts easier) really is, at its core. except the marketing is getting in the way of the function.
apple, for better or worse, understands this to some extent and has been just… doing what they do, clever shit with existing tooling and some new tech. it’s stuff that serves the user, thing is, they’ve done this with their ux for years like spotlight and a unified experience that is often intuitive (so much so that for those of us trained on the ridiculous abstract logic of windows and android, we struggle)
they’ve also obfuscated many low level systems to a fault, and i think largely are responsible for a reduction in technical literacy (like people not knowing how file systems work)
however, for machine learning? they seem to just do what they normally do and they try not to hype it too much, and they move slowly. and the market fucking hates them for it, they’re doing real shit that’s practical and the stocks are like “pfft where’s the planet saving gizmo tim apple?!? you fucking idiot!! i’m selling” even though apple will likely be the last man standing when it comes to this shit having any value while windows tries to find its own ass for the 100000th time and google starts turning people’s phones into unskippable ads
it’s hard not to feel like apple is the only true personal computer company right now from hardware to software, and to be real with you? that terrifies me because they are NOT the good guys
they will wall their garden and tighten their grip, just because the grip is velvet doesn’t make the pressure crush any less harder.
it won’t be microsoft or google that kill the free open web or personal computing
they’re just the underbrush
eventually it will be apple who, one everyone else is worn down with infighting, pushes the last lever that fucks us all over and traps us in their dominance
