Today I spent five or ten minutes watching an elderly patron fail CAPTCHAs over and over again...

"You have to click all of them to prove you're not a robot" I say "All of them? Isn't this enough to give the gist?" "Yeah but you're not proving it to a human you're proving to a computer that you're not a computer and computers don't think about the gist they need each one individually to understand" "But wouldn't that be answering the question the way a robot would?" "The computer believes that only a human can solve this puzzle. But you have to solve it like a robot. To convince it you're human. Listen I didn't make the puzzle okay"

people break/disable our self-checkouts all the time by interacting with it like a human rather than a machine. like no unfortunately you can't just scan the item and feed it dollars you need to put the item onto the scale and then look at the screen to ensure you answer the questions it's asking you. i know it feels unintuitive that you can't skip steps when the machine is meant to make the transaction go quicker than just coming up to my register but the machine won't know you're skipping steps unless you tell it

I know, right?! And on top of that, if you solve them too efficiently, then you fail to prove you're not a robot. If you do those image ones with "click all the fire hydrants" correctly but too fast, you don't pass, because wow, you're a machine! Haha. A machine. So yeah, at my normal human operating speed, I'd never pass. So I have to deliberately take a few extra seconds to be the human that the captcha wants me to be. Pretty existentially dreadful.
