yeah from what ive found; a slightly-bigger-than-100% keyboard like i truly want is probably gonna be stupid expensive, and probably cheaper to build myself from scratch. maybe one day
ooo i like this a lot! so many extra keys! that curve looks great to type on too
I really love this design. I really wish modern keyboards didn’t trend towards minimalism, and designs like these weren’t resevered for niche products like this. The older IBM boards are pretty great to type on! If you can find one for a reasonable price (around $100) you should try out a IBM Model M.
yeah i don’t get the minimalism trend either, i’m kinda stuck with gamer keyboards as a result, which are about 60-100 canadian.. not that i mind too much since i make ample use of macros (a big part of why i always want more keys). i’ve heard many love the model m but i don’t think i’ve actually seen one in person. i might have to look for one though cause one of mine is dying and up for replacement anyways
I got my Model M online and I’ve been happy with it so far. Two things to note with the Model M: 1. given that they’re older boards, they use older keycode types and connectors, so you’re gonna need an adapter to use them (I believe even for ones that use a PS/2 plug), and 2. there’s no Windows or Menu key (if you’re on Linux, the keyboard settings should let you remap one of the other modifiers to be a Win key, I use the right Control). There’s also a company called Unicomp, which still makes Model Ms with stuff like Windows keys added— though some people think there’s aren’t as good original Model Ms (I’ve never used one).
there is already a ps/2 keyboard in my house, one of those microsoft ergos from back when ergos were real. it has an adapter i should be able to borrow, no super/win key might be an issue, but remapping should work once i change muscle memory. it was my understanding though that a keyboard port and ps/2 were compatible?
I think a PS/2 Model M works fine when plugged into a modern PS/2 port? I can’t confirm, the PS/2 port on my motherboard doesn’t work for whatever reason. Though, the Model Ms used different plugs at different times. If you get a Model M with a DIN plug for example, you’ll need to plug that into a passive DIN to PS/2 converter, and that into an active PS/2 to USB converter.
ah, i'll have to see if i can get a ps/2 one then, since i dont have din anything around here. put up a bid on a somewhat beat up one, seller says its in working order so time will tell. most of the ones i saw were going for 150 or higher
