I had a post written up about "Eternal September" since it's being tossed around a lot lately. I ruminated how in retrospect it was an exclusionary term.
I deleted it, mostly because I don't have the time, but it's worthwhile in the midst of my scramble to tie up loose ends to briefly say that the first Eternal September kinda sucked in that a whole bunch of elitist nerds saw the influx of regular people who didn't like the things they liked and weren't masters of computers like they were, and thought something precious was lost even though they flamed each other all the time over the stupidest shit.
I choose to believe this Eternal September is different. If we're going to invoke this term to describe the sunsetting of Cohost, we should claim the term wholly, not as elitists but as we are right now: disappointed, joyful, confused, hopeful, angry, and scared of what the future might bring in a world we have so little control over.
Passing through this site changed us, and we can't ever go back to what we were just a few years before. "Something nice happened here," and I like to think that even though we are losing this site with many of us not sure where we will land, we are more sure about who we are and where we are in this world. We are more sure about what we want from those boxes and slabs on our desks, in our laps, or in our pockets.
We're going to be okay.
