Definitely the latter, really more of a minion than any being with real power! And even then he's not nearly as tricky as he thinks himself to be, like "What's that?! Hah, made you look, gobble snarf" levels of trickery
imagining a dude trying to like, challenge him to a game of wits. like some chess match or something, and the dude wins but he gets nomf’d anyways by the bat.
