specifically thinking about how as a coffee person who -- given that they had to spend $120 extra on a battery and charger -- presumably has not gone through the objectively bizarre modern ritual of Committing To A Power Tool Battery Ecosystem, they didn't see the value in it until the end of the video when they realized that the people who are probably buying it already have a bunch of these battery packs kicking around, so for them it's just a $110 add-on device that lets them drink fresh coffee at a job site

gonna watch this in a minute but-- it was indeed objectively bizarre when i realized i'd committed to a power tool battery ecosystem without even realizing it

There's also the scenario of how one day you will happen upon a power tool from a different battery ecosystem that you end up falling in love with, and then try and commit to a two battery system ecosystem for a time before realizing you made a mistake with your first choice oh so long ago and then start replacing every power tool you have with one from the better ecosystem.

Sorry Ryobi, but Milwaukee just does it better.

Conversely, as a sometimes a stagehand sometimes a computer toucher who has committed to:

  • Software ecosystems
  • Power tool battery ecosystems
  • Sound reinforcement hardware ecosystems
  • Fucking medium-duty portable stage ecosystems because that's a thing

I had to have it explained to me like I was very dumb why people find this strange to begin with

I hate capitalism death to capitalism fuck

every time I see people hack power tool batteries to make them compatible with other companies' tools/battery-powered non-power-tool devices it makes me smile

shit sucks and it's hilarious that we're going to get standardized cell phone charging plugs before standardized power tool batteries

supposedly it'll do "up to three" (3Ah = 2, 4Ah = 2.5, 5Ah = 3) according to makita's product page but yeah it's still pretty silly

the energy required to raise 5 ounces of water from 20C to 100C is 79.25kJ, and 18V * 1.5Ah works out to about 194kJ, not sure how much of the balance is lost in discharging the battery and how much leaks out of the hot water tank

I'm basing it on James Hoffmann's video where he figures out it can do 160mls of coffee on one of the lower-voltage batteries (it takes either) https://youtu.be/4xOEIpbxM4w?t=233

I mean, it's not a useless thing, just a thing that's probably more useful to the company as a funny thing people talk about than a product the very limited target audience actually buys

I mean if I had just a sliver of a reason to own one of these I'd but it in a heartbeat

edit: also in the comments of James' video is a bunch of people who talk about job sites where these are useful
