oh wow that's a lot of money to spend on just two stations, especially with how often they say they're running out of money or the recent fair increase, I guess fair evasion is a really big deal

seems like another "the cruelty is the point." perhaps with a side of "hey I know a guy who could make those"
exactly. if you're not from here, some background is that the el (one of our lines) is treated by the city gov and pretty much everyone as an overflow homeless shelter, like during the winter it's common for half of each train to be people sleeping and staying warm, which the board (not part of the city government) has been pushing against (to their credit they did so by hiring social workers and outreach teams to link people to services which, less cruel than I'd expect). so these being installed on only that line and at two stations where most of those people board at is uh telling to say the least
more willing to spend over a million dollars on purchase, installation and maintenace of big shiny Fuck You Gates instead of paying whatever price it takes to get homeless people off the streets and getting the help they need. truly nothing more predictable than Fucked Up Civic Governments.
SEPTA is particularly stupid about decisions like this.
Last year (or maybe '21?) they started closing some exits to the stations so that homeless people couldn't get in.... and that people who were riding the trains were getting lost trying to get out to the street.
love to create a fire hazard and dangerous conditions for everybody because The Homeless Exist. amazing
next week on US municipalities: we spend the entire budget that's not spent on cops to tear out all sidewalks to discourage Unsavory Sorts from traversing our pristine city
literally! oh but then people would use it for reasons other than commuting >.< and we'd have to sit next to people without jobs ;_; we can't have that

Even if you assume that only 1% of incidents are reported (very generous assumption, no way it's true) they'd still be like $250,000 in the hole
i always remember about how the UK spends many times more money on punishing benefits fraud than they actually lose to fraud.
because the point isn't to actually help people, just control.
