My latest chapter for the Korrasami fanfiction I'm writing was centered on providing space for Asami to deal with some of the trauma she faces in the show. (Why didn't the writers give her more space for that?)
But as I wrote it, I realized that this sharing of stories, this providing space for the healing from trauma -- that's part of what I need as a survivor of abuse and sexual assault.
Here is the note I wrote with the chapter (wonderful of AO3 to provide space for notes from the writer!):
"This chapter had me crying, and I am the one that wrote it! Oh, Asami, the trauma you've faced mostly alone. I wish the series had given Asami more screentime to find healing with her chosen family. So in this chapter, she is given another way to view the trauma to help her along her healing journey. As someone who has PTSD from severe trauma, I wrote this chapter thinking of my own pain. Of how sometimes, in the stories we share with each other, we provide space for others to relate, to seek understanding, and most importantly to find the courage to continue their own healing journey.
May this chapter help others too. And know, just as Asami had told Korra many times (in the "How Was Those Three Years" Fanfic I wrote), you're not alone in your pain and suffering. We all deserve healing and care. And our stories matter. And like Asami did here, don't be afraid to share your truth.
The next chapter will be heavy on plot. Let me know your thoughts. :)"
