There's a certain brand of cute/wholesome games that have this aesthetic that feels very... schmaltzy and fake in a meme-y way or is so homogenized that it doesn't feel impactful as cute/wholesome

I don't know how to properly explain it but it feels less like one true artists style and more an aesthetic adopted by the internet as quick reference to what is "cute"

like, I grew up playing the Harvest Moon games, I love Pokemon, and even Super Mario Wonder has this vibrant, adorable style that feels like their own thing instead of following a style guide

if any of that makes sense

Nah, I feel this. I think a lot of developers have noticed that people like cute games, but mistakenly think thay they appeal to people just because they're cute and wholesome while failing to notice the other (extremely substantial) things that make those games great. I've seen this a lot in "cozy games" that are clearly drawing inspo from stuff like Stardew Valley.

I hope this makes sense lmao, I'm running on very little sleep.
