so I'm very tired today and I'm just thinking out loud
but I don't think people or humanity or whatever has gotten any better or worse since... the advent of humanity, it's more that the interconnectedness of the internet has just given a monetary reason for people to be loud, angry, rude, and stupid
especially, with the rise of nerd culture over the past 20 years. because, let me tell you, nerds on the whole are pretty petty and vindictive and spiteful and clique-y. Like, you know Comic Book Guy from The Simpsons? That dude really exists and he's about 10,000 different youtubers and Twitter accounts
I also think social media has been feeling like high school never ended for a long time now. Aesthetic choices rule over all and people are just looking for some quick and easy morality so they can feel like a good person without having too put in too much work
For example: I was on Threads a few months back and I saw a black person say "White people don't understand how putting BLM in their public profiles can make black people uncomfortable" and a bunch of white people not understanding why someone would get it offended. But it's virtue signalling, which unfortunately was co-opted by the worst idiots online (though now they've moved on to "woke" or "DEI" or whatever other words they don't truly understand)
It's like, just because someone says the right words or dresses a certain way or is the same race and/or gender and/or sex as you doesn't mean that they're automatically a decent person
You can't judge a book by its cover and all that.
I guess what I'm saying is that social media has diminished getting to actually know people in favor of making a Personality out of oneself or adopting an aesthetic
