I don't use herbicides, even homemade ones, but I suspect something like a combination of vinegar and dish soap in water is the sort of thing you mean, if that helps any with search terms.

If the weeds are coming up through pavement and you're near a kitchen or whatever, you can also pour boiling water on them. This will smell of cooked vegetation for a bit and it isn't the nicest thing for any critters who are living there but it's very effective and quite safe. I don't ever do this on open ground as the boiling water will also kill the not-weeds and it's a bit harder for critters to hide from it.

I'll opt for the boiling water where I can in that case, and it might be easier too, since this going to largely be driveway weed control so I won't be scorching my lawn proper. Not sure if I can just boil a giant pot of water and then ladle it out over the weeds, but I'll figure out delivery logistics as I go!
