The old magic terminal of setting some crap in com..apple.finder with "defaults" doesn't seem to work on Sonoma anymore, and the Command+Shift+Period (or Command+Shift+Space some other sites were saying?) does not last between resets or propagate into file/folder dialogs.

Awful. I don't know who's responsible for this stuff but they did a bad job on it, especially since they broke the terminal fixes. In Windows this is a single goddamn checkbox I do once in the "defaults" and walk away from.

Why is literally every operating system so freaking user hostile. Why did Windows have to start taking the piss with Windows 11 and AI and integrated always-on internet services. Fuck.

FUCK!!

On my Sonoma system, defaults write com.apple.finder AppleShowAllFiles -bool TRUE has always worked fine... Maybe you need to give full disk access to Terminal.app so that it can write the setting? (semi-guessing about that part)

And just to confirm: after running the command, did you restart the Finder (or log out and back in or reboot the system)? The setting doesn't take effect immediately.

PS: but yes, it would be really cool if Apple would expose a proper GUI option for this setting that's existed for probably 20 years now and is clearly useful to quite a few users
