I just had a raspberry pi get bizarrely unstable and fucky after about 3 years of uptime, and eventually discovered:

  • The hardware itself is fine, but the SD card has Gone To Shit
  • Apparently SD cards.... just do that?? after a while??? this is a Known Issue????

suddenly realized I dodged a gigantic bullet by never setting up a pihole. Why the fuck would ANYONE trust one of these things with an actually-important long-running task if the boot medium self destructs?? Apparently everyone in the Pi Community knows about this and just.... fucking lives with it??? "Yeah I decided to run my entire home's DNS through The Computer That Kills Itself. I bet it won't kill itself while I'm doing anything important"

in reply to @Thew's post:

yeah I guess an external ssd is a lot more trustworthy than an sd card, although it still feels Uncomfortable lol

Saw people suggest setting up a NAS as an NFS server so you can netboot all your pis from a reliable medium, but that REALLY seems like an "I have a problem -> now I have like eight problems" type of solution lmao
