mainly just to keep options open for people to get a hold of me, if nothing else. but the sheer amount of choice leads me to want something overly specific, like having an instance that's general purpose but NOT catch-all (i.e. aimed at a specific group of people with a common interest, but people can talk about whatever), but also of course it has to actually be relevant to my interests as well, and hopefully would have some staying power so it doesn't die suddenly without warning
shame that theabsolute.plus doesn't have a fedi instance anymore otherwise i'd probably just go on there tbh, though an instance dedicated primarily for the TGM community is probably not in particularly high demand so i understand why it didn't work out. finding something that does exist is a massive pain in the arse though, there's far too much choice, so i either have to settle for a big catch-all place or try to slot in somewhere that I don't really fit. probably the biggest issue with that platform as far as adoption is concerned.1
i'm internally debating whether or not I should sign up on fgc.network given that I respect the FGC a lot, so it seems like it'd be a decent place, but I don't actually play or follow fighting games much myself2. I don't particularly need a fediverse instance given that the speedrunning folks - the broader community I still feel most adjacent to even if I don't speedrun much anymore - seem to be jumping onto here instead, but it's possible that not every community is gonna end up in the same place so. kinda want to have contingencies in place for that just in case twitter truly does kick the bucket (and i want to use it less anyway)
- yes I am aware that it doesn't matter on a technical level since you can (...for the most part) follow whoever whereever regardless. it's the social factor that matters, I'm not really wanting to identify myself with something irrelevant to me
- FGs are somewhat fun to watch, so I guess I have some light community presence from deriving spectator enjoyment out of them. but I don't actively follow the scenes for any game, nor do I even really watch FG videos that often. I'm more just sort of in the general venn diagram as it seems all three pillars of tetris, as well as rhythm games (a weaker link since I'm only just getting into those), have at least some community overlap, but the lack of personal interest means it's a very minimal association lol
2022-12-25 update: not making a new post about this since it's pretty inconsequential (and I have no base here yet anyway), but I decided to go for it; i'm on the fediverse at @Tiyenti@fgc.network now. not sure how much i'm going to use it, but i guess my have my options covered in that part of the internet now too. feel free to follow me on there if you want as well, i suppose.
