I can think of a handful of games I missed when I skipped the ps3 during its initial release. The Silent hills, I think there were two, Down pour and Homecoming. Metal gear 4, Resistance fall of man. Nothing else comes to mind or if it has, has been remade for newer consoles.

So what do you think? are there more untouched gems waiting to be uncovered or was it a system to complex for its time, destined to be put on a shelf collecting dust as a ill proportioned monstrosity. Doing its best impersonation of a jet hitting its afterburners.

Thinking of maybe buying one.

I'd say yes. The second half of its life cycle was bamger after banger. It took a while for devs to understand how to program for it, though once they did, we got some amazing stuff.
Also, if you're looking to collect physical, it's definitely time to go for it. Prices are starting to go up, but still manageable.

Yep! Although I don’t play my PS3 too often my gf has taken a shine to it, playing Skyrim for probably at this point close to 100 hours. In terms of games that you can really only get on PS3, some include:

3D Dot Game Heroes (Zelda-like)
Metal Gear Solid 4
StarHawk
WarHawk (apparently there are still fan-made servers out there for multiplayer)
Modnation Racers

The biggest problem I have recommending games is that a lot of the fun was had online and just impossible now. Like Resistance 2 co-op, Killzone 2 (there's also a single player story but online was where I had the best time with it), Warhawk, MAG, LittleBigPlanet.

But as Perro said, Starhawk! It has a single player story and it's decent! Warhawk if you want to go through the effort, it's probably my favourite game from the console, the reason I got it in the first place, but there's a learning curve to it all and you'd be going up against the most dedicated of players. They don't really make shooters like it anymore.

Probably worth checking out the Uncharted games, I don't think they ever got rereleased, right?

My PS3 died before I got the chance to pick it up but there was a Twisted Metal game.

Might want to check out the Motorstorm games too.
