akira!!!! my girl... my pretty girl... all nice and dolled up for the ball... uuu....

this was still just fucking around with faces + a lighting study this time! I also really used a ref (even if I changed some stuff) for the first time in forever and by GOD was it helpful

an artist I really admire mentioned that they don't really worry about consistency, necessarily, and focus more of their effort and attention on the mood of the piece + what it's supposed to portray, as though each individual piece (or grouping of pieces) is what that character may look like viewed through different people's eyes. and I think that's really neat!

I've been fighting with it for a while but it helped me understand that there's, like... ultimately nothing wrong with having multiple ways to draw the same character? as long as you can semi-replicate it, it's just that character viewed in a different way!

woa

I probably should've taken the time to also study the fabric instead of Just Winging It but I honestly couldn't be assed LMAO

πŸ˜³πŸ’• she looks so mature with this red lipstick!!! and the dress fits her so well!!! idk theres something about this that makes her more intimidating? like a beautiful yet thorny rose? the ambiance in this is also πŸ‘ŒπŸ‘ŒπŸ‘Œ with the strong light and shadows!!! kiwa my beloved!!!

thank you!! that's definitely more of the vibe I was going for than how I typically draw her-- she's a noble! she's meant to be cooly intimidating with how she holds herself, that's just not often the side of her I try to portray, because she's... not as much there as she once was. she'll get back there, though <3

the lighting was a ton of fun to do!! I originally made it a lot warmer, but I think the cool contrast is nicer in this instance. this new method of shading's been helping out a lot too- it's your standard greyscale painting but all of the layers of shadow and light are separated so you can adjust their colours/modes once it's all done. it goes super fast!! <3 the only downside is it's a little harder to properly blend but I have no fucking idea how to blend anyway LMAO

Ohhh I agree with the sentiment!! I was talking with a peer the other day, and I mentioned that we, as artists, tend to use many different materials and techniques because we just have this itch to create! I don't do character design so I can't directly relate, but I came to the, rather obvious, realization that there are many different ways to draw, as long as the mood is transmitted!

thank you so much!! the expression (mostly the facial proportions) was something new but a lot of fun to mess around with, and the lighting was really fun too!! really nice to have a direct reference instead of having to think about it in entirety, and contrast always makes the brain feel v good πŸ’•
