Whenever something like this affects the internal products, I'm left wondering about the external products, because the external products might just be one of their internal products in a different enclosure, and the same problem that affects one might affect the other. Unfortunately the most detail they get into about their USB SSDs is that they're NVMe.
They could be completely separate implementations and the external products don't have this problem. But it would be nice to have confirmation one way or the other (preferably in the “no, your external SSDs are fine” direction).
you might install Samsung Magician and see if it picks up the USB drive
would you believe i have 5 of these running since last march
and had to plug all of them into a windows-booting machine to do the update
fortunately they didn't get all that worn really, probably because they're just not that full
yay proprietary firmware update platforms with hardcoded download servers
you can download a linux executable for patching them (it's still a .EXE file lol) but it's not at all clear whether updating the new firmware version with it (which you can also download) is actually supported so i simply did not chance it
Didn't they have this exact same problem with the flash in their phones years ago?
Don't do Samsung, folks.
