one of the most depressing things about the way production is structured in the world today is that there are all of these startups inventing cool new manufacturing techniques, and literally all of them rely on military contracting because the US Department of Defense has an insuperable amount of money to blow on unproven technology

also 1) everyone asks for more money next time around because asking for less sends the wrong message, and now we gotta spend this money, and 2) the military-industrial complex needs all US industry and technology to become an arm of the military, for soft-power reasons.

there's just so many great reasons to bloat!

Outside of partnering with NASA(barely) it's almost impossible to get grants from the government like NSF in the industrial and r&d sector without going to the pentagon.

I got my start interning at the Naval Research Laboratories and oh boy the amount of weird shit and bureaucratic hoops we had to go through to get Linux approved because it was "free." I think we were required to buy x amount of Windows keys by government appropriation or some BS like that.
