Yeah... it was a bad time for a lot of people.
I know a few people who were caught up in all this. Not all still in games, but people are definitely in better places in their lives now, thankfully.
that and using any one game as a barometer for the success of any genre or theme is objectively ridiculous
The word about ROM1's development tanked anyone's interest in that becoming a franchise so hard that this is literally the first time I'm hearing that ROM2 exists.
fwiw I tried to get a review copy for a possible feature and got no response, and the service they use for distributing keys automatically disqualifies anyone it doesn't recognize as a writer for a specifically video game-focused publication. Not a great way to get the word out from what I saw

I always thought I'd have more to say/dread when it did eventually come out, but thanks to lots of therapy and having a lot going on for myself career-wise, I was able to rest. But it's distressing how few people seem to remember what happened, and how other people seem to be perfectly okay with the team changing up so drastically. I think this is part of media literacy being at an all-time low. Thank you for talking about it consistently.
Not sure it's media literacy, this thread is the first I'm hearing of any of this as a huge fan of the original. There's a lot of terrible game dev stories out there, even folks who care reasonably won't hear about all of them. Good to know all of this, though, condolences to the folks who had to deal with all of it.
I did not know ROM2 was even released. I remember hearing it was being made, but I thought it had been cancelled.
rom 2 is in such a weird fuckin place as a game. like i want the people who worked on it to do well, but also i Don't trust the, like, two or three people who decided to stick with the company for the new game. also for some reason gaymerx is mentioned in the credits of the new game, even though they split off from midboss after the abuse allegations started, and to my knowledge only exists as a discord server at this point in time. the people in charge of the official gaymerx server want no association with midboss, so they couldn't have done it...but i do have a theory
i backed gaymerx on kickstarter in 2017, and the kickstarter is still updating. i think whoever's in charge of that (probably the current ceo, cade?) might be trying to make gaymerx a midboss-associated thing again, since the pandemic kinda killed the idea of gaymerx becoming its own convention independent of midboss
