I'm just gonna say, if you're a publisher of localized Japanese entertainment in any medium and you have full-time staff working for you who are taking on freelance work for any reason other than that's genuinely how they want to spend their spare time, I don't care who you are, you've fucked up as a company and don't deserve whatever success your workers have managed to conjure up under duress.

That I can think of multiple companies like this, some of them either worth billions or with parent companies worth that much, is an embarrassing condemnation of this whole industry and frankly an enormous reason why it's gonna have to take one hell of a sweetheart deal to ever get me to go in-house this deep in my freelance career. Because for the vast majority of job listings I see, I make more money for less hours per week (though still plenty, mind you) hustling on my own, droughts and all, than I would scraping by working directly for a lot of these companies. That's how dire the math works out the majority of the time, both here in Japan and especially in the States.

Do better by your workers and a great way to start aside from raising your base wages is to have profit sharing plans for every release1. Full stop. I don't care how big or small your title is, your foreign releases are literally nothing without your localizers and they deserve better than bragging rights.


  1. And royalties for your freelancers, as well, thank you very much. Don't think we don't notice the sales numbers in your press releases.
