if you can find (on, say, the internet archive, hypothetically) the fan-made "Morton-Jankel Cut" that includes deleted scenes recovered from nearly-lost footage that contain important context that actually fixes a bunch of the confusing parts! (plus payoff for a joke setup that never got resolved in the final release.)

yeah, it's fully and wholeheartedly committed to its insane (and super fun!) cyberpunk world, which is something that narratives sorely lack in this dark age of irony. I bet you if this movie didn't have the mario IP attached to it then it would have been remembered fondly

People talk so much shit about their interpretations of things like goombas and Toad but ignore how they did the bob-ombs better than the games do. just a lil guy waddlin around but everyone who sees him screams "BOB-OOOOMB!!!" and runs for their life, it's delightful.
