@maxine64 asked:

Is there any Soulslike you enjoy that wasn't made by From Software?

I guess this sort of depends how broad you want to get with the term "soulslike", but not really. Wo Long had some good stuff going for it but it kind of squandered it focusing on the least interesting aspects of the game. I'm not sure the term even has much use as a genre definition—I think Armored Core 6 has definitely proved that what makes From's games great isn't their structural innovations (even though they are kinda brilliant) so much as their meticulous design of the moment-to-moment experience and their grasp of the interplay between friction and mastery.

The two games that could conceivably be described as "soulslike" that I really loved (although both of these are very far from that term's center of gravity) are:

  • Dead Cells, which kind of has the iframe dodge/parry thing going on but is really much more interesting because of its run-based structure and the creativity you can bring to bear on its builds than in any of the way From's action games are interesting.

  • Unsighted, which actually does capture some aspects of what's charming about FromSoft's overworld traversal but is so good largely because it's extremely confident in doing its own thing.
