It seems likely that the English language frontrunners that weren't prematurely culled by McCarty, were copy pasted over the Chinese nominations voted for by Chinese fans.

And the thing is, it's not even a "slate". It's a huge number of speculative fiction fans in China, reading Science Fiction World and getting excited about voting for a bunch of titles - both Chinese and English titles.

Add that to McCarty and the committee compiling sinister dossiers about authors to justify excluding their work from the ballot.

It's racism all the way through. And there's a fair amount of ugly responses by other white people going round too. A lot of white people insisting that this is because of holding Worldcon in China. Rather than it being the case that a bunch of other white people used "we have to engage in pre-emptive censorship and dossier-making in case we offend the CCP" as an excuse to censor whoever they liked. So you have the ridiculous situation where it's white people excluding Babel, their excuse being that it would be unacceptable in China, but Babel had already been translated and published in China! This is a debacle constructed by a group of white people in order to assert their gatekeeping privileges over the whole field.

I also blocked one white writer declaring that he thinks next year's Hugos will react by nominating and giving awards to "token" and "mediocre" writers of colour. Using this clusterfuck to pre-emptively line up a kick at any writers of colour who get a nomination or a win in Glasgow - some white people just want to find any excuse to discount POC. The problem is not that there aren't any deserving writers of colour to be found in any given year! It's that the Hugo Awards needs to be transparently run so that in any year it's possible to see the data and understand the process.

Imagine having to deal with that out of the blue?! Truly a cursed situation.

But then also:

Maybe they should have spent less time compiling dossiers about writers and more time researching sponsers instead. 🤦

in reply to @AtFruitBat's post:

I hope this isn't an imposition but could you help me understand the significance of "it's not even a 'slate'"? I've seen a few similar remarks and tried to get it through context, but I think I just don't know enough about the awards process to understand.

Either way, hoping that the censored authors can get some attention and have their works seen in spite of this mess 😔

Okay I've found my answers! Sharing here for anybody else who is following but not very closely:

This blog post (which also links an apology letter from one of the Hugo admins) indicates that the committee suspected the excluded Chinese authors were colluding and rigging the nomination somehow, perhaps even operating as a slate (which I am learning is an awards/election term for a group that is aligned somehow with a goal of winning as many awards/elections as possible for its members)

Hopefully that's helpful to other industry outsiders who nonetheless care about SFF ❤️

God damnit every day I wake up and it's worse somehow.

Remember when the Hugos were manipulated by white supremacists slate voting? I guess they couldn't do anything about it then. But they can definitely just discount a bunch of fans voting for their faves as long as they're non-white!

yeah that was what stuck with me when i was originally reading the comments of the FB post. the idea that throwing out clear vote manipulation was impossible bc of integrity but racism under the guise of preemptive self-censorship is a totally fine reason to “correct” slate voting. it’s so infuriating esp bc that piece of shit was SO holier than thou on socmed about how people were idiots and how all of their DQs made perfect sense.

it’s also the first argument that is so completely believable because in my daily life i know people whose opinions and beliefs go fucking insane when it comes to china.

fuck sake. this is getting worse.

FYI I really appreciate your takes on this- I've seen loads of like you said, white people, being outraged in a mad racist way about this- laying the blame entirely at the door of 'china'.

like you said-it's fully white people pre-emptively censoring at the behest of the racist cop in their own heads.

ANYWAY the rules of parasocial relationships indicate that even though my response does not add anything I am compelled to reply to try and boost your serotonin levels through engagement metrics.

Hope you're doing well!
