The entire Macross series being added to Disney+ internationally but the original series and DYRL not being included in western regions is so funny, like god damn not even Disney lawyers could defeat Harmony Gold lawyers.
At my age I'm not sure how the timeline adds up anymore but either DYRL or the Robotech anime airing on Star TV in Cambodia might be my very first exposure to anime as a distinct medium (in the sense of me recognizing it as different from whatever other cartoons I was watching at the time). I could be wrong, because I've also said that watching Yamcha die in 1993 might be my first anime exposure, but whatever, I was born in 1985, it could be any of these things
We had a laserdisc player and the only place in town that carried them had a lot of Japanese imports, and to this day I still remember the scene of the Macross coming out of the shadows in the intro and of Hikaru and Misa playing house in the dead city
Edit: there were no subtitles or dubs, obviously. I also remember distinctly learning about fucking Broly before I even had a solid idea of what dragon ball even was because this place had an LD of the 1993 Broly movie and nothing else DBZ related
I almost never find people remotely my age (28) who seem to have much interest in the original Macross series and DYRL, but I still think they're both utterly astounding works all these years later, flaws and all. It contains a very special "you WILL turn into an otaku" power that I still rarely see.
