I don't think the fundamental technology of AI-art are unethical. But all widely used models are. To have an ethical one, you'd have to design and train a model using only images you have commercial rights to (CC0 or such). Even then, it'd be possible to use it unethically; a model can't be inherently ethical but it can be inherently unethical.

So you have your not-unethical model. You'd have to use it as a tool in a greater creation rather than an end-all-be-all "we've solved art." And just like any technology, you should carefully consider who you let use the model you created--are they going to use your work to fuck people over, or create art without care? Are there second or third order impacts of introducing a new technology?

when engaging in an action that could create significant harm to people and their livelihoods, care must be taken to protect them.
