science fiction society where the only people who can make and use computers are an order of monks, not to consolidate power or because its seen as dangerous but because the things businesspeople do with them is so annoying
in my conception the monks have to take a vow of poverty and mostly use the computers to make weird glitch art and noise
I'm thinking that the monks meticulously maintain elaborate fan wikis for all cultural artifacts, and make their living from donations from pilgrims who come to ask obscure lore questions about Star Trek and wealthy patrons who commission fanvids. which are of course pressed to VHS because no computer-based players exist outside of monasteries
