In 2005 the deathgrind band Cephalic Carnage released the album Anomalies. Which featured the track Dying Will be the Death of Me, a hilarious satire of contemporary trends in the recently popular genre of Metalcore (more commonly known by the term "Melodic Death Metal by way of the Gothenburg Scene"). It had the added bonus of being a killer song too!
In 2007 they toured Australia (with The Black Dahlia Murder) and I went to see them in Adelaide. Before playing Dying Will be the Death of Me, it was introduced with a bizarre "True Heavy Metal will never die!" monologue that made it sound as if the song were meant to be entirely sincere and self-serious.
And it didn't ruin the song, which is very obviously not self-serious. It's still one of my favourites Today, nearly two decades(!) later. But the whole time I was listening to that rant I was thinking, "Man, this fucking sucks!"
Anyway. Apropos of nothing, this is exactly how I felt reading about a new city builder about satirising the American tendency to replace useful buildings with parking lots...
...and then reading that the game is made by someone in Netherlands who read about it on the internet.
