here's one more classic Doom compilation for the road.
i started out creating a nice little care package for a newbie friend but ended up largely revamping the setup i've used for 15+ years. my goal was to make it easy to play all the foundational Doom-related games and start exploring the amazing Doom community's creations for them alongside a dual focus on gritty vanilla+ presentation (Crispy + Cherry source ports) and a tastefully enhanced but still pretty mod-compatible instance of GZDoom. i'm super pleased with the latest result! here it is:
highlights and additions after the cut~
beyond the previous features, some of the bigger changes include
- GZDoom fully configured with tasteful defaults for the five main games
- one-button ruleset swaps (try pressing period) support "ZDoom," classic Doom, Heretic, and Hexen/Strife gameplay styles
- batch files switch between highly modded / lightly modded GZDoom autoload presets
- it looks and sounds very pretty too, uwu
- simplified file organization; IWADs now in one central folder
- centralized soundfonts folder too, with some new additions
- DoomRunner's pre-loaded with three main types of mods: music packs, randomizers, and major gameplay changers. easy to toggle to try something new
- there's so much added music, jesus. it's well over half the filesize
- convenient cheat reference for each game in DoomRunner itself
- Nugget Doom has evolved into Cherry Doom, my new, new fave source port
- most bindings reset to defaults, now. enjoy your WASD esdf is better
- handy launch / config shortcuts in the root folder
- community QoL fixes for Aliens TC (including a much-needed Horner/Goldsmith OST, i love it!), The Master Levels, and others
- Chex Quest 1+2, five-and-a-half unofficial commercial expansions, and Freedoom 1+2 join the party
- a bunch more changes i've forgotten over the last ~2 weeks
well i'm pooped. hope you enjoy! i know i'm going to... i'm halfway through my first-ever run of TNT in Cherry. then it's time to revisit Aliens...
