sliding scale salaries that came around with the generalization of remote work are really interesting in that they remove the pretention that salary is related to the work that you provide, and instead it's a stipend so you don't die and can keep working. within a category, of course. they typecast a job as belonging to a certain set of living standards, and then they give you the money that you get that living standard - but not more! you can't cheat the system by living somewhere where that money goes further! you get to attain this social class and that's it

also really funny that it was totally accepted before 2021 essentially, because the people who were doing that were either way too business critical, or executives. but once workers started wanting to do it, it was rolled back

San Diego and DC are more expensive than "the Bay", sure -- but they're not more expensive than San Francisco, in the same way that the DC suburbs aren't more expensive than the East Bay suburbs

My company broke out the salary multiplier by region the same day they announced a remote work policy for covid, it was the very first consideration and they scrambled to figure out all the IT logistics etc. days to weeks later

Just insanely mad that the comms director was planning on living it up in North Carolina on a DC salary

yeah i know at my company it's justified as "something something cost of labor" (which iirc is in opposition of "cost of living" but i dont remember the details). everything to pay as little as possible i suppose

It's basically just a housing market adjustment, essentially, it all goes to rent. The people I know in the bay say if you're not getting promoted, you're always losing the race with your ~10% yearly rent increases.

will never forget my dev job in 2018 working with a guy that was 100% remote because, as my boss explained, he was “a rockstar and gets special privileges” but when I brought up that my disability medical needs are much better met from home he told me a very emphatic no and would eventually fire me over it.

then a year and a half later everyone got to work remotely anyway no problem. then they decided that was Bad actually and now we probably don’t get to do that anymore. I’m so tired.

there are limits! my manager has indicated it's a somewhat silly expectation of mine that my company with a very posh london office would give me enough money for permanent living in london - he himself lives comfortably about two hours away by train
