A struggle I've had with some stories I've liked is that they ended up escalating things too far. When the scale becomes too big, I struggle to remain invested, and focused. I suppose if the writer is skilled enough they can keep me interested, but I've dropped off several times.
It can also be an issue if things escalate too fast. It's a complicated issue.
