i think it finally clicked for me why technology nowadays feels so lacking in creativity and direction. other than the obvious fact that it's entirely being driven by businessmen (who are driven more by consumers/profit), those businessmen are often just following the creative visions that have already been created for them (e.g. AI, holographic screens, the "cool, sleek" aesthetic of UI that have been shown in movies) rather than pushing their own vision. the "wild west" phase of the internet was probably due entirely to the fact that there WAS no precedent or vision to follow, so people's own creativity showed more.

could be wrong tho, i don't actually have much personal knowledge about the early days of the internet so i'm just assuming. curious what others think

There's this series of thoughts I keep wanting to write up about how I really like the ui for Steam, because like every button and dropdown menu has slightly different styling so it really feels like everything was designed by someone instead of just following the template for Tab Menu A or whatever. Also how Mac app icons were so much more interesting pre-Big Sur, when the norm was to have your icon be a unique shape instead of the same rounded square everybody is supposed to use now. At least in visual design I can totally see what you're getting at.

right! i've seen criticism aimed at Steam's ui for the exact same reason, and as someone who likes to be generally practical, i understand WHY ui (among other things) tends to be "samey" now, but there's still so much more room to be creative without sacrificing that much readability (and there is an argument to be made about today's ui choices actually hurting readability anyway).

ui is the most obvious example, but it's feelings that were brought on by multiple things. me and my friends were talking about how all phones look the same nowadays. but it's also a lot of my feelings when looking at recent advancements in technology in general. tesla's sleek cars feel like they were designed based on what "cool, futuristic" stuff looks like in sci-fi movies, and ai art feels more like it was developed because of how "cool" the concept might be rather than solving any actual issue.

obviously there's no actual basis for what i'm saying because i'm purely talking about my own feelings about how technology feels, rather than anything objective. it just feels like technology is moving in a direction that feels very anti-human to the point that i'm becoming attached to older technology despite usually being objectively worse. the gamecube controller has SO much personality while the ps5 controller looks like it was designed by a robot. and if i had to choose, i would use the ps5 controller over the gamecube controller literally any day. but man, i still wish technology felt more like it was being advanced by humans for humans rather than leaving them behind.
