I didn't end up liking Shadow Tower as much as I'd hoped. The opening area is so promising, as it both drips with a tense, spooky atmosphere and feels like a place that exists and once had a purpose in the game world. The feeling of purpose carries over to some of the other areas of the game, but overall, they start feeling more like generic levels you'd expect from any other fantasy dungeon. Making HP a resource you can spend to repair gear is also a great tension-increasing mechanic, forcing you to debate whether you can afford to use up limited healing in order to make sure you have weapons powerful enough to deal with the more dangerous enemies... up until healing becomes much, much less limited. It almost feels like Fromsoft lost confidence in their design at some point and backed off, which isn't something I'd say about any of their other games. Shadow Tower's still absolutely worth playing, especially if you're a fan of Fromsoft and want to see early versions of ideas they reused later, or if you're a sicko for first-person dungeoneering like I am. I just wish the game was more willing to kick my ass and lean in on its horror aspects, though.
