if you silence a post, it gets silenced so hard that it and all future derivates of that post don't just vanish from your feed, they are literally vaporized from your vision, forever

to a degree that trying to go to that post, or any of its children, results in a 404 error.

i, uh, do not think this is a good user experience.

suggestion

like blocked users, show a "you silenced this post. are you sure you wanna view it" dialog. or literally anything other than making it look like the post literally doesn't exist

edit: since apparently it wasn't clear, i don't mean "the post doesn't show up in a timeline, user page, or wherever". it does those things too, that's the normal behavior.

i mean if you silence this post, specifically, and then try to go, say, to this post, which is a reply of this one, you will straight up get a 404 error. you will not get any indication that the post is silenced and merely not visible, it pretends the post straight up doesn't fuckin exist.

all i'm saying is that if you directly view a post you've silenced it should fuckin tell you that it's silenced and not pretend it literally doesn't exist

in reply to @xkeeper's post:

yeah, that's how i found out what happened. it took me a few tries, because it was happening across all pages, even ones that i have never interacted with anyone on (usually for testing shit like, well, this)

no, i want it to be out of my vision forever. I don't even want to have to think about it, and if i don't recognize it immediately from "you blocked this post" then I have to SEE it again to know what it is.

the solution is a list of blocked posts sorted by OP and searchable by tags or words, accessible via settings like your blocked users.

if someone makes post A, and you silence post A, and then someone replies to it creating post B, post B is invisible to you and will give you a 404 Error if you try to view it. this is not good

if it said literally anything else, like "this post is silenced" or whatever, that would be fine

Yeah. Yeeeah. I would like to be able to come back to a post after it's spent a couple of days getting hammered and actually read what people have been saying or doing with it. I just want it to be quiet and not flood my notifications; I don't want it full-on exterminated.

whats weirder is that you can see these posts when your on the page managing your silenced posts! but if you try to go to their permalink they 404. I thought I had somehow silenced a deleted post and still had access to it (indicating that it wasn't actually deleted) until I read this.

that's more or less how i found out about this; direct post led me to a 404, incog it worked fine, test alternate account didn't work, wasn't blocked since i could see all the other posts fine. checked silenced posts and yep

you're right and you're right to say it

but part of me really enjoys being able to cause a site to return a 404 to me, on purpose

it feels like i took a laser and eradicated a tiny part of their servers, just for me

(but yes it is a terrible and confusing experience)

AAAAA
So that's why i see 404s like this on some chosts linked in others. I thought i either got blocked by their author or they removed it due to some drama or otherwise.
That's awful D:

I do wish I had a way to silence posts in a way they got sent to separate piles as in, 'pile of posts that are good but kept showing up too much on the feed' and the shadow realm

yeah every few months i seem to run into something like this and forget why i stopped silencing posts.

i like how it works on the cohost corner, too, so you can silence that and make the "newest post" whatever you want as long as it's old
