If you're on any government benefits (or qualify by income), sign up for Internet Essentials. They might make it a pain in the ass but don't be dissuaded, the $10 (or $30) internet bill is absolutely worth the trouble.
Also sign up for ACP if you haven't already, with that you'll be able to get onto the higher plan for literally free (though that might end soon if the government doesn't fund it again, but just being signed up for it might help you get in, too)

The typical advice is to call and threaten to cancel your service, but over the years, I've found that the better tactic is often to simply call and ask about it. If you ask enough questions, or express your disappointment at the rate increase in a reasonable way, or simply mention that you will have trouble affording that, the folks on the other end are decently likely to try to help you out. They're typically empowered with some latitude in the service rate, and they'll (generally) work harder for you if you're kind to them. It comes with the bonus of not having to threaten something you may not be ready to carry out, especially if they're the only game in town for you.
