also a common concern of people who take the philosophy surrounding AI as seriously as it really ought to be taken
Oh, yeah, absolutely, as AIs get closer to… territory where sentience becomes foreseeable?
Like, before sapience. This is not all that well informed conjecture — I've only done part of a degree on this stuff, so I'm not an expert — but AIs might have emotional states before their semantic understanding of the world reaches the level of what humans have, yeah?
I definitely think that AI will be able to suffer long before they'll be able to understand suffering, and I think that ought to be a compelling reason to stop and think
