Honestly, just... the concept of counter culture in general. Like, stop me if I'm about to have a real "old woman yells at cloud" moment here, but an unfortunate side effect of reduced barriers of entry to the various subcultures out there has been that a lot of it has gotten really, really commodified. Every meaningful leftist movement in my lifetime thus far that didn't simply get beaten down into submission has ended up getting coopted by liberalism and subsequently completely defanged, so many subcultures (very much including goth) have been turned into products to be bought and sold, simple aesthetics to put on with zero attention paid to what any of those scenes actually ever stood for - and we're slowly starting to see similar happen within furry, between the onslaught of resellers drowning out artists at cons and wave after wave of wannabe burned furs who only seem to be furries at all because they have nowhere else to go, not because they... actually want to be here if the kind of shite opinions they spout all over Twitter are anything to go by.
I don't know. I don't think gatekeeping is the solution to any of this overall, but at least we should probably start calling the most obvious posers posers again.
