a lot of folks have been noticing that our API has been having questionable performance all day, resulting in e.g. comments and posts being very slow to post or appearing to time out but then posting anyway. we're investigating right now, but right now the root cause looks like an outage at our metrics provider for the past 12 hours that left our autoscaling services in the dark and (even worse) didn't even give us notifications when performance got bad as a result.
jae's out sick today so we're at reduced operational capacity right now, but we're going to hand-fly the web site for a bit until things stabilize, and post more technical details once they're back and we can decide what fixes we're going to get in place.
