anyway i don't think i could ever use a keyboard without a numpad as a long-term solution.

hold down alt, dial in the order on the numpad, release alt. i think its windows only?

have you ever tried WinCompose? it enables unix-style compose key sequences on Windows. no more weird number combos. you can create your own too if you want
