there is, of course, the well loved and truly classic competition of post hole digging--I love how quiet it gets when the diggers form the empty space, and how it's immediately followed by such a roar from the crowd--and I've earned a couple ribbons from the lovely judges down in the css crimes tent, but I think my favorite part is how the infodumping pavillion just gets bigger and bigger every year. Last year they had to put up two of those giant tents outside the building they built specifically for that purpose on the fairgrounds (if you recall, that was what the big funding drive was for a while back; there were several bake sales [plus a baked sale if you get my drift], a couple sexy calendar colabs, and some generous cohosters even donated the time and equipment to lay the foundation--a real community effort!) Before I even got through the first tent and into the "main" building I had already lost several hours to both thoughtful dialogue with some fine amateur entomologists and a particularly exquisite monologue on the intricacies of the influence of tile maps on the flavor of deepfried gameboys. I had filled a field notes with links, new things to research, books to read, and contact information by the time I finished wending my way through and out the flaps of the second tent. Can't wait to see what everyone brings this year (and maybe I'll be brave enough to request a table one day...)

nothing compares with the drama of the tag slug obstacle trials. I go every year. the expressions on the kindergartners’s faces as they try to get their tag slug through the course…. emotion in its purest form.

if this is your first visit don’t miss the vegan giant eggbug sculpture made entirely out of margarine. fans call this “the big e”. it’s close to the center of the fair and makes a good meeting spot.

no family day at the fair is complete without a visit to the midway. we always go on mecha wristband day. in the evening I’ve been known to bid at the makeup a guy charity auction.

where I can see the lump of carbon that used to be Ryan Reynolds.

It's also a good place for people watching. Some folks come in real casual, snap quick pics of the lump and are out of there in a jiffy, chatting noisily about the next thing they want to do. Others look sombre or even a little afraid, and file quietly past the display, reading every bit of explanatory text along the way. My favourites are the ones who look quickly around themselves and then lean in towards the lump and take a big sniff. I've done that myself.

What does it smell like?

You'll have to queue up and pay your 2 eggbux to find out too.

the bustling atmosphere of the cohost fair is great, but personally my favorite memories are of when i need to breath a bit of fresh air away from the crowd and there's an impromptu love honk concert in the parking lot
