HARD MODE: Don't say Undertale
I think mine is probably DOOM 2016. I don't know that I've ever had more raw, uncut, can't-believe-how-much-I'm-enjoying-myself FUN than my first time going through that game. I legit was hooting and cackling like a madman while scrambling around blasting demons and dodging fireballs and getting sick glory kills. My first playthrough was roughly 20 hours of some of the purest joy I've ever experienced in my life and I'd give ANYTHING to experience that again.
Honorable Mention: Heaven's Vault. GOD, that game is cool.
Probably Sayonara Wild Hearts. I played it blind, having only seen screenshots and was glued to the controller for the entire game. Very few games have grabbed me quite as hard as that one did.
Eastshade is definitely my pick. Finishing the game was like saying goodbye to a friend. 🥹
About Eastdhade. One of the most wonderful games ever made.
It's probably a bit basic to say this, but Breath of the Wild (and almost certainly TotK when we finally finish that).
BotW was so good that it tricked me into thinking I might like Open World games and it turns out I don't lol. It's a fantastic game, absolutely amazing. I played it for over 100 hours just exploring the world it gave me, every nook and cranny. It was the first Zelda game I'd played in well over a decade, and after it I went and played a bunch of older Zeldas and I found I really enjoyed a bunch of them!
However, whenever I've tried to play BotW again, it isn't anywhere near as good. Don't get me wrong, the core gameplay is very solid and fun and it isn't a bad experience by any means. But it wasn't full of that magical excitement of wandering around and tripping into things I didn't know were there. Of finding new korok lads and gear and learning new things about the world.
I replay games a lot (often for platinum trophies, looking at you every Tales game ever) and I don't often feel like I'm having a much less good time. BotW is one of the few I think is worse on repeat experience for me personally. I would love to play BotW again for the first time.
