Still a little strange sometimes

He's a loser who pervs on girls kind of as a running joke, but, ultimately, I found he kinda grew on me. He has more of a character arc than most of your party members: he struggles both with Strega's point that if the Dark Hour goes away he won't be special anymore and the fact that he's playing second fiddle to you, a girl. His sexist posturing kinda loses its bite when he's saying it to you, a girl, one of his best friends, and you get the option to rib him for it. He improves as a person and even meets a Goth GF for his troubles. It's a likeable character arc where all the pieces fit pretty well.

But, you know, basically all of that really hangs on the FeMC part. Playing the male route now, and even knowing most of the lines are basically the same, it really does feel a lot worse, because he's not jealous of you for sexist reasons (and therefore confronting them and growing as a person when he gets over them), and when he's saying pervy shit about girls it's to his weirdo guy friend, which kinda just makes him another sad dude who sees girls as an alien species.

And it's kind of amazing how, despite the fact that you're playing a silent, blank slate protagonist, the gender you pick at the start of the game utterly changes the tone and subtext of his character, at least for me

It definitely doesn't help the male MC route that you don't get a social link with him. His social link with FeMC is really good, and a big part of that is the fact that you cannot romance Junpei, no matter what.

Yes! You get way more interaction with him in them and ultimately even if you're into him he makes the very mature decision that he's not ready for another relationship, which is just utterly unheard of in these games

The fact that the only party members the male MC can social link with are the ones he can date definitely adds to his creep factor, too. They wrote a protagonist that isn't even willing to spend more time with the pet dog than necessary.

Social Links are an interesting idea kind of hamstrung by the romance aspects and the bizarre writing in a lot of them. P3 is the worst bc you have to enable every horrible decision your friends are making or you can't advance the social link and get stats.

Except Bebe, his purehearted weebness is fine. Go forth and be cringe, my weird little french friend.

Yeah, lol, the male MC route has kind of been in constant competition for the worst thing we've been rewarded for saying: telling our friend to date a teacher, telling another friend to tough out a knee injury, telling a small child to run away from home, you really are expected to go along with some of the worst impulses of these kids in ways that even a high schooler would be able to tell are wrong.

Except Bebe. Stay safe, weeb Frenchman. 🙏

It makes me want a game with social links and no dating aspect, you're just getting closer and learning their stories and it doesn't get derailed at part 8/10 with DO YOU LIKE ME Y/N? or turn on you because you told your friend not to shoot meth.

i often wonder how in the world p3p girl route managed to come out so much better than the rest of the series, and my wild guess is that as a rerelease, this didn't get a ton of directorial oversight and some lower level writers were allowed to put out something good for once
