If we're going this route, I want to clarify that the imperial era name isn't the reigning emperor's name, but a reference sourced from Chinese literature. I'm not saying we have to abandon this being the Year of Luigi, but we do to have to recognize we're in one of three possible scenarios:
- It is the Year of Luigi, but Luigi isn't the emperor. (Emperor of what? Who's to say?) The actual emperor is somebody who would've chosen his name owing to a strong cultural and historical connection to Luigi - Empress Maria, perhaps.
- It isn't the Year of Luigi, and Luigi is the emperor. In this case, a representative of the imperial family would have to choose a dynasty name from a body of literature with strong cultural and historical connections to the former. I'm pretty sure this means the era would be named after an old Popeye short.
- It is the Year of Luigi and Luigi is the emperor. He has abandoned cultural traditions to an extent that not even Shinzo Abe would, tyrannically concentrating authority within his own person. At the very least, I expect this to snowball into a major media event.
Bonus scenario: it is not the Year of Luigi, nor is Luigi emperor. Where the name comes from is a mystery to us all.
