maybe this is inevitable and i'm the precious one for feeling as i do but man, the casualness and ease with which people crack jokes about oppenheimer is. SO fucking bleak lol

the degree to which "war criminal" has been sanitized as kind of a humorous thing to say about characters in stories and so on is like: fine, sure, that was dumb to say about steven universe and his rock moms. but perhaps the fact that the mass death of minority populations so rapidly became a funny joke quality for a character to have says something about how much value americans assign to the lives of foreigners

i feel like the joke very quickly shifted from laughing at the pretentiousness of Christopher Nolan tackling subject matter that absolutely does not need to become a big budget summer blockbuster, to ha ha oppenheimer funny meme man

as it always does. there's a post out there that goes something like "be gay do crimes struggles as a slogan because people aren't repeating it because they agree with its politics, but because crime is a funny word to say" and it feels like a similar thing has happened here
