Latest discovery; I was looking at the header of the Mac save file and thought, well, that looks suspiciously like a picture. I wonder if it is? And it turns out, yeah: it's a colour VMU save icon from the Dreamcast version. Turns out the Mac version was ported from the DC version so literally they taught the Mac how to read Dreamcast save files, icons and all.
"taught a Mac how to" is such an interesting way to describe it, but honestly yeah
