I've been getting emails that someone is trying to access my accounts. Naturally, I already have a plan. In a way its painful to go around deleting memories of who you were, and what you were doing. Each accountt is like a fingerprint from a ghost. In some ways I miss the person I was, but they're not here now. I am, and I need to protect myself and others.
Today's plan:
- A mass the list of accounts I've held.
- (opt.) Delete those that no longer serve me.
- Strengthen each one's password into a strong, unique combination.
- Reduce the amount of access and information each one may have.
- (sub. 1.) Scramble my information with fake details. A different 'real' name registered to the account, set as a different timezone, covering up my footprints and throwing the chase away.
- (sub. 2.) Reduce the potential damage if such an account gets hijacked. Remove inactive contacts. The cut-offs I'm operating at is a year or more will be an edgecase, two or more years is an immediate removal.
- Learn more about cybersecurity and designating time into my routine to stay informed with best practices.
In the future I imagine myself as just abandoning online payment processors given risk something may financially hurt me. I've ditched entire discord servers because its userbase kept falling to the itchio game scam that hijacks their account. I've had friends fall victim to it, and could've fallen victim to it myself only: The art style did not match my friend's. and after downloading the game I just decided to immediately delete it.
People call me paranoid, I call it a survival instinct.
